The Alumni Relations Directorate was established in 2010 and forms part of the NMMU Trust. The establishment of the directorate is part of a broader strategic vision for NMMU that recognizes the value its more than 90 000 alumni in building an even greater institution. It is an international higher education practice to establish alumni associations and chapters and have a symbolic home for alumni on their campuses – called the Alumni House.
The functional purpose and requirements.
An Alumni House that is more than just an administrative building but a symbol of connectedness with Alumni and their lifelong relationship with the University. The building must symbolize the past, present and future. The building must fit in with the environment but also be unique, since it represents those that passed through the doors successfully. It must also reflect a highly professional, yet inviting work and entertainment environment. The Alumni House will also be the home of the Student Alumni Society which serves as the training ground for future chapter leaders, trustees, alumni association executive members, donors and passionate alumni ambassadors. Alumni and fundraising staff offices will be part of the Alumni House. Currently Trust staff have offices on different campuses and also rent space from external service providers.
Support from Alumni and Friends
To realise this vision and to find a suitable working environment for staff and interaction space for alumni and donors an amount of about R25m will be required. We already have pledges of R10m including contributions from the NMMU Trust and Council. We still need to raise R15m for this project within the next two years.
