National launch of SAHRC social media charter at Mandela Uni
Nelson Mandela University hosted the official national launch of the South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC) social media charter last week.
The social media charter is a product of the SAHRC, aimed at educating and guiding users of social media, companies and organizations under the theme: “A Call to Action: Defending Human Rights in the Era of Social Media”.
The Social Media Charter addresses instances of online expression that, while not necessarily meeting the legal threshold for hate speech, nonetheless detract from social cohesion and violate the right to dignity, two important and interlinked principles of the Bill of Rights.
Nelson Mandela University alumni awards celebrate Eastern Cape’s finest
Nelson Mandela University honoured a selection of its most successful graduates at the institution’s annual Alumni Awards ceremony last night (23 March 2023) at the Madibaz Sport Centre, on South Campus.
Eight awards in three categories were conferred on alumni from a wide spectrum of disciplines, including sport, law, psychology and academics.

Mandela Uni Prof ranked amongst the best in SA
Emeritus professor in the School of Information Technology at Nelson Mandela University, Prof Rossouw von Solms, has been ranked by Research.com as the 4th best scientist in South Africa for 2022 in the field of Computer Science.
Research.com is a leading academic platform for researchers. It has just released the 2023 edition of their ranking of best scientists in various research fields.
This best scholars ranking is a trustworthy list of leading scholars from the field of Computer Science, based on a detailed analysis of 166,880 researchers discovered from a variety of bibliometric data sources. For the field of Computer Science, more than 14402 scholars were analysed.
Rare honour for computing sciences professor
A Nelson Mandela University professor has been selected as one of two African mentors for an elite global mentorship programme.
Prof Brenda Scholtz (MSc ’08), a lecturer in the computing sciences department at NMU, was also invited to be among a trio of panellists selected from 44 international mentors at the MIS Quarterly Scholarly Development programme earlier this year.
The programme will be offered as intensive virtual contact sessions, hosted throughout the academic year.
The programme supports emerging academics and researchers under the umbrella of the academic journal, MIS Quarterly, which publishes articles on computer science applications, information systems, information systems and management, and management information system
Mandela University teams up with Alumni-in-Action to provide support to survivors of GBV
Nelson Mandela University has partnered with Alumni-in-Action (A-i-A), an initiative whose mission is to enable access to advanced mental health support for student survivors of Gender-Based-Violence (GBV).
This is through the organisation’s funding to enable survivors to have up to eight sessions of therapy.
This chapter of A-i-A was launched today (8 March 2023) at a webinar.
A-i-A was co-founded by Zellah Fuphe, a University of Cape Town (UCT) alumnus and Sanda Nyoka, a current UCT student. It initially launched in partnership with UCT in August 2021.
Following the murder of a young female UCT student in 2019, Fuphe and Nyoka felt compelled to advocate for an end to the negative impact of GBV by personally funding the project.
